A legacy of hospitality
and culture

The building of today’s Hotel Johann Strauss was erected around the turn of the century as a middle-class apartment building. The tradition of welcoming guests was established in 1912 with the “Maxim Bio” cinema. The convenient location right next to the Johann Strauss Theater (Favoritenstrasse 8) guaranteed regular visitors.

The proximity to the Johann Strauss Theater and the home of Johann Strauss Jr. led to the cinema being renamed to Johann Strauss cinema. Unfortunately, the theater was demolished in 1959 and was replaced decades later by a residential building owned by the municipality of Vienna.

However, the history of the cinema continued and the “Erika” guesthouse was established in the apartments above the cinema. From 1961, the guesthouse was taken over by the previous owner’s family and operated as the “Clima Dependence”.

A few years later, the entire building was acquired and gradually converted into hotel rooms and renamed the “Clima Hotel Johann Strauss”. The former cinema hall became the hotel lobby. At that time, the hotel already had 29 rooms, but some apartments were still occupied. In 1985, the owners started to convert the remaining apartments into hotel rooms.

In 2011, the Kremslehner family acquired the Hotel Johann Strauss and has been investing in the maintenance and expansion of the hotel ever since. After a 80 year break, the Kremslehner family added another hotel in a central location to its portfolio.
